Spring Capsule Wardrobe With 20 Essential Pieces

Have you ever said “I have so many clothes and nothing to wear”? I am pretty sure you have! Don’t worry, you are not alone. This quote sums up a lot of us women today. This happens mostly because you have collected too many pieces of clothing, that you bought just because they were on sale or you thought they were cute. Which are still with the price tag on. And you still keep clothes you haven’t been wearing for the past decade, in hopes to wear them again one day soon. Which will not happen. So how can you find the right ones in all this clutter? Ah, drama drama drama…

Don’t worry, I am here to help you out. What you need is a new, spring capsule wardrobe. And what is a capsule wardrobe? A compact wardrobe of fifteen to maximum thirty pieces (including accessories), in coordinating colors, offering you the possibility to create as many outfits and combinations as possible.

By the way, if you want me to write about how to change your wardrobe and style by decluttering your closet, let me know and I will gladly do so! My wardrobe is pretty compact! 😉

Here are my twenty wardrobe must-have essentials for a super stylish and versatile spring capsule wardrobe.

20 Essentials For A Spring Capsule Wardrobe

#1 Trench Coat

This all-time-classic piece is either way a must-have, and spring is the best season to wear it. With one of these, you can wear earlier your favorite summer tops, and make the look spring-appropriate, by topping them with a trench coat!

#2 Denim jacket

I think for most of us, this is the number one must-have for a spring capsule wardrobe! Drape it over your shoulders, or add an additional layer to your favorite flowy dress by wearing it tied around your waist. Another smart way is to button it up and wear it as a shirt, with a colorful pair of pants or skirt.

#3 Navy Blazer

This is the springier alternative to the classic black blazer. It usually reminds us of nautical inspired looks, which remind us that summer is approaching! Hence, I really like it for spring. For a more polished, not too business-like look, opt for a navy blazer with gold metal buttons.

#4 Breton Top

A must-have in every woman’s wardrobe, the Breton top, or the marinière, is also very hot right now and perfect addition to your spring capsule wardrobe. You can wear it with cropped jeans and slingbacks, or with a pair of culottes, and pretty much with everything! With the necessary accessories, you have a super stylish spring look for many occasions!

#5 Crisp white shirt

I am always looking for the next best crisp white shirt for my wardrobe. This piece can take you from fall to spring and from a day to night look with ease and style. This season the crisp white shirts and blouses are everywhere and in many styles, so there’s no excuse not having one. My favorite ones are the longline cut.

#6 Off shoulder top

The cold shoulder trend is not going anywhere for one more season, so if you enjoy an off shoulder top as much as I do, there is still plenty of time to enjoy wearing it!

#7 Sweater

For the sweater-holics, there are plenty of beautiful lightweight knits for spring for you to choose from. A sweater like this is a must have for a spring capsule wardrobe, as it can be worn with jeans, tucked in a skirt, or even as a dress, by wearing a shirt dress or slip dress underneath. So many outfits!

#8 Slip-ons

This is the time to swap your ankle boots for a nice pair of leather slides that exude effortless cool. It’s about time to show some ankle, don’t you think?

#9 Mules & Slingbacks

Choose one with block heel as it can take you from a day in the office to a night out for cocktails, in style and without pain. I would recommend a nude, black, or metallic tone so you can match it with all your spring capsule wardrobe.

#10 White Sneakers

Because they go with everything, and they are spring-perfect! You can wear them with blazer and jeans for a casual Friday at work, or even with a dress for a laid-back evening look.

#11 Color pop sandals

Nothing screams “spring” more than a nice color pop on a neutral outfit. I am crushing on pink right now but there are so many options to choose from!

#12 Cropped Jeans

I am not recommending them because they are the trendiest jeans right now but because you can show some ankle and your favorite shoes. If you are not ready to DIY cut your jeans, there are many options for all styles and body types to choose from.

#13 Shirtdress

You can wear it with a denim jacket, a light sweater, jeans, heels, flats, you name it! It’s one of my favorite must-have wardrobe staples all year round.

#14 Black pants

It’s basic, it’s timeless, it goes with everything. It’s a must-have!

#15 Wrap skirt

The wrap skirt is the perfect balance of conservative and playful, which makes it suitable for multiple day and night looks!

#16 Culottes

They’re feminine, elegant, comfortable, and easy to style!

#17 Scarf

Between seasons, a scarf will upgrade any outfit. Do become best friends with this accessory! Choose a lightweight material in a light-colored spring print to channel cooler weather. And if it gets too hot you can always tuck it into your bag.

#18 Pastel Tote

Now it’s time to switch your black leather tote with an off-white, beige or pastel tone tote. Neutral colors are better if you wish to wear it with as many outfits as possible.

#19 Crossbody bag

The crossbody is my favorite bag style! I just love the hands-free option. The smaller the better, as long as it fits your essentials.

#20 White bag

White bags are so on trend right now. And by white, I mean off-white, which is more versatile and all-year-round friendly.

Happy Friday, and happy shopping! 😉

Oh my! 15 to 30 pieces for a a spring capsule. I need to be buying more clothes then.
Btw. I had a lovely Italian evening. Time and space prevent me from telling you how much I enjoyed myself. Delicious food and eight different wines to sample. All very informative.
    Hugs, Jo x

Hi Stella! I love this post. I am a recovered hoarder, but I’ve become so good about decluttering and keeping only key and essential pieces and cool old t-shirts that I love and wear over and over. I have never thought of creating a capsule wardrobe though. It seemed stressful and so limiting to me, but your post made total sense of it. And I like that you give us 20 essential pieces instead of an unrealistic 5- or 10-piece capsule that I’ve seen other girls claim they can pull off. 🙂 Wishing you a wonderful weekend!

I know how you feel hun! I had the same thoughts about capsule wardrobes. It depends on your lifestyle and space mostly. For example, for the past decade I have been moving a lot due to work (changing 3 homes per year), hence a capsule or semi-capsule wardrobe was something I had to learn how to master. In my very own home back in Greece though, there is a big room dedicated to the not-so-capsule wardrobe of mine haha! And yes a 5-10 piece wardrobe is unrealistic and I am pretty sure no woman (or even man) can pull it off, unless they mean it’s for a 3-days vacation getaway or something, right?
Thanks for stopping buy and have an amazing weekend yourself! xoxo

I’m not really a capsule wardrobe kind of gal, but I love SOOOO many of your pieces here! The sandals are all so gorgeous (come on, spring!). I need some new cropped jeans, and your selection is just fab. Really lovely choices, Stella. I hope you have a brilliant weekend, babe! xx

I dragged Maksim at Zara the other day to show him a blazer I liked. He said did you do the 6 outfits rule?
haha you are having an impact on my boy, and you know how much he loves rules.
I didn’t get the brazer after all :p

Hahaha you guys are hilarious! So the blazer didn’t pass the 6 outfits rule? Not even 5? I imagine it was something a bit extravagant, not like a simple black or white one right? Send my greetings to Maksim! 😀

It looked sort of Chanel, bit blush-ish with pink. I think it looks lovely.
Maybe at sales I’ll be able to justify the buy:)
