10 Transitional Pieces For The Best Fall Wardrobe

As much as most of us hate to admit, summer is coming to an end, and the first fall chills are already in the air. However, fall is by far my favourite season! I don’t know if it’s because I have been born late September or the fact that I usually have only fall/winter vacation, but I always look forward to that first hot cup of coffee. Besides, it’s that period when you get to wear again your favourite cashmere cardigan, and that stylish trench coat that you scored during the #NSale.

Bonus: These specific transitional pieces are timeless wardrobe essentials that every woman needs, no matter the season! So now you have all the reasons you need to do some smart shopping!

Must-have Fall Transitional Pieces

[tg_divider style=”normal”]

The denim jacket

I think for most of us, this is the number one go-to between transitional pieces! Drape it over your shoulders, or add an additional layer to your favourite flowy dress by wearing it tied around your waist. Another smart way is to button it up and wear it as a shirt, with a colourful pair of pants or maxi skirt.

Trench coat

This all-time-classic piece is either way a must-have and fall is the best season to wear it. With one of those, you can still wear your favourite crop topped make it look fall-appropriate, by topping it with a trench coat in the same colour!

Blazer

Extend the life of your favourite sleeveless tops with a tailored blazer. For a more polished, not too business-like look, opt for a blazer with gold metal buttons.

Long sleeves

Sometimes, transitioning a look can be as simple as changing your sleeve length. You can always roll up the sleeves on warmer days, and layer it under a sweater when it’s cooler. Wear a crisp white shirt with your favourite black shorts and a trench coat, and voila! Or just wear a Breton marinère with cropped jeans, a black blazer and a pair of flat slides, and you have a transitional, super stylish look for numerous occasions! Statement sleeves are hot right now!

Fall florals

If you love florals and you want to wear them all year round, well you can! What’s more, dark florals is one of the major fall trends for 2016. Just choose darker shades and keep blooming!

Turtleneck

Wear it with a sleeveless coat to be work-ready, or under your favourite slip dress. Not to mention that ‘turtleneck hair’ is a life-saver when you have a really bad hair day and an instant lob, without the commitment! Fashion and beauty go hand in hand. If you feel like it’s too soon for a turtleneck, think about the sleeveless option.

Black shorts

Another good news is that you can still wear shorts! Pair a black pair of shorts with opaque tights, pumps and a long-sleeve blouse, or style them with a simple t-shirt, a trench coat and you are golden!

Loafer slides

This is the time to swap your sandals for a nice pair of leather slides that exude effortless cool. It’s nice to show some ankle before wearing your winter boots, don’t you think?

Block-heel ankle boots

This is one of my favourite shoe trends and a must-have wardrobe staple. I love how great they look with a  midi skirt, plus they are a great option to add a little height without sacrificing comfort and stability.

Scarves

Between seasons, a scarf will upgrade any outfit. Do become best friends with this accessory! Choose a lightweight material in a darker fall print to channel cooler weather. Besides, if it gets too hot you can always tuck it into your bag.

Essential Tips for Transitioning Into Fall

[tg_divider style=”normal”]

#1 Ignore the dumb fashion rules

Feel free to wear whites after Labor Day or wear your favourite high-heel sandals with a nice pair of socks. These dumb rules severely limit the scope of your fall wardrobe. Most of all, don’t sweat it by thinking wether your outfit is fall appropriate and think instead if it’s weather appropriate and makes you feel great!

#2 Add deeper tones

Mix colours associated with fall into your wardrobe, like marsala, mustard yellow and browns. A masala cardigan over a floral dress would be a great start.

#3 Layering

Unleash your creativity! Layering is the perfect way for extending your summer wardrobe into fall, but try to keep it simple to avoid looking like you just had a huge fight with your closet. Make sure you have a maximum of three layers and if you don’t feel confident with the result, 2 would be fine as well.

So which are your favourite transitional pieces? Do you have any tips or hacks for transitioning your summer wardrobe to fall? And is there any dumb fashion rule that you just love breaking? For example I wear whites all year round as much as I can! What about you? Please feel free to add yours in the comments below, we would love to read your ideas!

I hope you’ve learned something new today by reading this post! Thank you so much for stopping by, and have a great week!

Oh yessss, I love turtlenecks and it’s one of those things that you really can’t wear until fall because they’re too hot in the summer! I have a round face so the turtleneck really brings out my shape and it’s probably why I love them! Awesome post!

You are so right, they do bring out shape to the face and also make a long neck seem much longer! If I had to choose just one style of tops, it would be turtlenecks, I love them too and I wear them since I can remember myself! Thank you so much for reading, I am very glad you like the post! Have a great day! xx

Hi Rachel, so glad you like my post! To tell you the truth, we barely have winter too here in Greece lately. Its not tropical like Australia, but the only chance we have to wear our favourite heavy coats is when travelling! So for now and until my next trip, I will stick to my favourite denim jackets and layering! πŸ™‚

Some great ideas here, for me scarves really make the world of difference to add warmth to an outfit, even in the Summer months it can get chilly especially in the UK.

The boots you have showcased here are gorgeous!

OMG you are seriously adding things to my wish list please stop ahahah πŸ™‚ I love the transition from summer to fall (also winter to spring) because you can really have fun with layering. Here in India I miss so much fall! I live in south india so it’s just hot or hotter! We only get raining season but it’s still at least 28 degrees outside. When I go visit family in France or Canada I just enjoy wearing jackets, blazers, trench coat etc… I think I can manage loafer slides here but may be not with fur inside πŸ˜‰

Wow, Stella, this is such an incredible post! You can see the amount of effort you put into your selection, including both high, mid, and low price points for EACH category, thank you! The selections you’ve shared here are all gorgeous and are perfect for transitioning. I love your tip on not following the fashion “rules” because many of them make no sense anyway, like no white after Labor Day. To be honest, I had fallen victim in following it for years, but I’m way past that now because it just makes no sense, haha! Thanks for sharing, gorgeous, and I hope you’re having the most amazing week so far!

I la-la-la-love fall and I agree with you, it’s probably because I’m born in the fall. But these items look so nice and comfy. I’m in the market for a new denim jacket and a few blazers so some of the options you list are catching my eye! That mustard blazer in particular has to be owned by me ASAP!

This is the perfect post for fall! I’ve been wanting to do a post about fall fashion, so this has inspired me to get on it! I love all of your selections. I just bought a less fitted jean jacket that I can’t wait to wear, and I have several bomber jackets that I can’t wait to add with summer pieces as well. Great tips for transitioning your wardrobe to fall, I totally agree! I also love wearing white year round!
